Chief Operating Officer (Short term insurance) – Johannesburg, South Africa
Introduction
The COO will be responsible for enhancing the organization's processes and infrastructure that will allow the organization to grow and achieve goals. The COO will maintain a leadership role and accept responsibility to ensure that the organization's strategic business plan objectives are accomplished.
Responsibilities
• Evaluate market trends and developments in the short term insurance industry
• Formulate and implement the operations strategy and business plan within the short term industry
• Evaluate on an on-going basis with emphasis on risk and compliance for the division and its staff
Financial Management and Oversight
• Working closely with the Head of Finance and Operations, manage and oversee all financial and business planning activities, including:
• Direct and administer all financial plans.
• Oversee business policies and accounting practices.
• Review and analyse financial reports.
• Support and advise the CEO in decision making.
• Lead and support organizational budgeting process.
• Oversee reporting and monitoring of organizational performance metrics.
• Provide overall financial oversight and monitoring.
• Ensure that relevant financial data is presented to the CEO and senior management team.
Operations
• Oversee risk management and legal activities: letters of agreement, contracts, policies, and other legal documents and agreements.
• Business insurance: procurement, monitoring and management.
• Information technology – working with the manager of information technology, ensure the on-going maintenance and updating of information systems and infrastructure, including hardware and software.
• Organizational reporting and monitoring: provide guidance and leadership through management of the organization's metrics and measurement reporting process.
• Office management: oversee administrative functions for across Africa, ensuring smooth daily operations.
• Manage insurance programs including claims assessment and renewals.
• Manage investigations of claims in compliance with regulations.
• Analyse reports submitted by claims supervisor and third party administrators.
• Manage claims recoveries and reporting thereof.
• Provide guidance and advise to management on developing, implementing and revising insurance programs and policies and resolving financial and legal issues.
• Formulate information required for a short term monthly pack based on the organization and individual's achievement
• Board of directors – working with the CEO provide staff support and guidance to the organization's board act as staff liaison to relevant board committees.
• Leverage relationships with existing and new clients.
• Provide training and seminars to staff and management.
• Responsible for the continuous update of the short term insurance business plan and adherence to procurement compliance.
• Ensure all process and procedures within short term insurance comply with local regulations and laws governing business operations.
• Demonstrate success in dealing with complex insurance and risk management issues.
• Achieve corporate goals through the on-going selection, performance management and development of employees.
• Responsible for the effectiveness of all internal processes.
• Develop management reports and business intelligence tools needed to track and measure performance of all business lines.

Requirements
• A bachelor's degree in finance/economics/business administration.
• Strong technical skills within short term insurance.
• Extensive insurance knowledge and experience.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Represent the company professionally, both internally and externally, including furthering the company image with the shareholders, employees and community.
• Advanced skills in Internet technology, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook.
• Able to demonstrate strong leadership skills, analytical and decision-making ability and create for the future.
• Provide a favourable attitude toward change and continuous improvement as well as commitment to bottom line profit.
• Effective organizational skills and ability to respond to requests effectively and efficiently.
